8th May 2010 - Ironman Training steps up

The countdown is on with less than 10 weeks to go to Ironman Switzerland where 12 club members are taking part with 1 other member doing Ironman UK the following week.  Waterford Triathlon Club has one of the largest Irish contingents to head over to do the Ironman which consists of a 3.8k swim in Lake Zurich, 180k cycle followed by a 42k marathon run. They have been training hard over the past few months, trying to make their sessions progressive and beneficial but interesting to make sure they don’t get burned out too soon.  Some have done an Ironman before but this year the training and the lead up to the race is much easier with so many to train with and lend encouragement.

With this in mind, we held a half Ironman distance training session last weekend with the Ironmen hopefulls swimming 2000m in Splashworld pool (it’s still a bit too cold to do that distance in the sea!), they then cycled 100k and followed it with a 21k run in to Waterford and back to Tramore.  It turned out to be a tough day with a strong wind on the bike which almost had them at a standstill even going down the hills!  They all completed it between 5 hours to 6 and a half hours, and now feel much more confident about their upcoming race even though its twice the distance.  Times and photos can be found on our website.

Those competing in Switzerland include Shane Scadding, Tom Casey, Aubrey Storey, Martin Kirwan, Noel Ryan, Gavin Quinlan, Stephen Doyle, Marc O’Cathasaigh, Brian Slattery, Barry Lambe, Michael Bowes and Mark Hayden.  Kieran Eaton is taking part in Ironman UK.  2 other local athletes competing in Switzerland are Brian Sweeney and Donal Jacob from the Carrick Triathlon Club.
