7th June 2010 - TriAthy Triathlons attract huge entries

Last weekend almost 2000 athletes from all over the country were in Athy to take part in 4 races over the 2 day weekend.  On Saturday we had 23 club members take part in the Olympic distance race which had 700 competitors of a very high standard.  With so many in the race, there were 12 starts to the 1500m swim which had the first 600m upstream against the current.  The 40k cycle was over 2 laps with the 10k run being very technical with parts of it off road and along the river bank, also being 2 laps.  Sunscreen had to be applied liberally which also meant the run was tough and humid with very little air to keep you cool.

The wave starts were decided quite randomly with the over 40 men starting first, followed by the ladies and then the other age-groups.  This also meant that no-one really knew where they finished, whether ahead or behind others, until the times had been adjusted after the race so there were a few surprises in store!

Davin Power had a long wait for his start in wave 10 but he obviously kept himself focused as he had a great race to finish 12th overall in 2.07.37, 1st home from the club.  Shane Scadding got off to a great start as he started in wave 1 so he did not have too much traffic in his way on the bike or the run.  He posted a great bike and run to finish 14th overall in 2.07.56, 2nd in his age-group.  Stefan Green was next home in 33rd place in 2.12.54.  Only seconds separated the next few home, who had all started in different waves, with Michael Moloney coming in 2.22.10, Marc O’Cathasaigh in 2.22.53, Michael Bowes in 2.23.40 and Mark Hayden in 2.24.30.  Andrew Hickey was next home in 2.26.48 with Colin Fanning in 2.28.41.

Gavin Quinlan, who had gone wrong on the run and added on an extra few hundred meters, was running scared from Stephen Butler and finished in 2.30.22 and 2.30.35 respectively.  Emmet Kelly was next home in 2.35.08 with Brian Flynn to finish in 2.41.22, Aidan McCarthy in 2.44.20 and Mark Daly, who was doing his 1st Olympic distance race finishing in 2.46.55.

Carol Sinnott was the 1st of the club ladies home, happy with her 1st Olympic distance race to finish in 2.50.32 with John Carew not far behind in 2.51.53 and John Power in 2.53.39.  Derek Barrett was next home in 2.55.28 with a delighted Roisín O’Grady home in 3.07.05 after completing her 1st Olympic distance race.  Dave Forristal got a bad cramp in the swim so had a lot of catching up to do on the bike and run but finished in a great time of 3.08.54.  Sean Roche was next home in 3.16.23 with Cora Marshal also delighted with her 1st Olympic distance race to finish in 3.28.11.

Olive O’Brien was having a great race but she had terrible trouble with her bike during the cycle with her chain getting wedged in the frame and then her shoes not clipping into her pedals so she had to retire at that stage.  Ned Power was also having a brilliant race but only made it to a few hundred meters on the run before an injury forced him to retire. Darryl Hale was also going great in his 1st Olympic distance race but a collision between him and Stephen Doyle on the bike course forced them both to retire.  Stephen had some nasty cuts and bruises but fortunately they were both ok.

The following day Peter Barry took part in the Sprint distance race which consisted of a 750m swim which also had an upstream start, 20k bike and 5k run.  He posted the 7th fastest bike split of the day to finish an excellent 5th overall in 1.04.55, 2nd in his age-group.  Padraic Connolly also had a great race, gaining loads of places on the run, to finish in 1.16.18 with Michael Cox, also overtaking many on his strong run to finish in 1.18.22.  Caroline Russell, who is still a bit nervous in the water, had a lot of catching up to do after the swim but she made up loads of time on the bike to finish in 1.32.26.
