12th June 2010 - Success at Schull Triathlon We had 8 members who made the long journey to Schull to take part in their annual sprint distance race which attracted over 300 competitors from all over the country. The weather was fantastic which put every one in a really relaxed mood before the race and they just ambled around almost forgetting there was a race to be done. There race was split between 2 starts with the 750m swim taking place in the sheltered marina. There was a steep run out of the swim to collect the bikes in transition with another steep run out onto the road before the competitors could mount their bikes before the 20k cycle. Many people opted to run in their bare feet for safety reasons and put their cycle shoes on at the top of the hill. It was same on their return, with many taking off their shoes before they attempted to descend the hill to transition as it was too dangerous to cycle down it or walk down it in cycle shoes. The 5k run was an undulating out and back course. Shane Scadding had a great start to the race to emerge 7th out of the water. After posting the 4th fastest bike split he returned to transition in 2nd place before heading out on the run but did not have a large enough lead on this pursuers to hold them off for long so had to settle for 4th place overall, in 1.08.31, 1st in his age-group. Andrew Hickey also had a brilliant race to finish 35th overall in 1.18.06. Ned Power has been plagued with injury for the past few years and had made many attempts to get enough training done to resume triathlons. He started this race in Schull not sure if he would make it to the bike section. When he got on the bike, he made up loads of places as he passed all the faster swimmers, still not sure if he would manage the run. He surprised a few people who saw him on the run course and he made it through the whole race successfully, his 1st race in 3 years, to finish a delighted 41st overall in 1.19.09. Siobhán Kennedy has really taken to her new sport as she gets stronger in every race. She had an excellent bike and run which brought her up the field to finish in 1.26.40, 1st in her age-group. Carol Sinnott was also delighted with her race to finish in 1.28.15. Norma Goggin was racing for the 1st time this year and was happy with her race to finish in 1.40.41 to get a prize for 2nd in her age-group. Caroline Russell and Michael Carroll were home within seconds of each other with Caroline crossing the line in 1.45.26 and Michael in 1.45.47. The following morning most of the lads took advantage of the weather and scenery to cycle around Mizen head while Shane cycled most of the way home to Waterford as part of his Ironman training. |
