17th July 2010 - 1st Triathlon for Cahir

Last weekend residents of Cahir saw the 1st Triathlon to take place in their home town with the inaugural race being stage 2 of the Tri3 Series.  It consisted of a 750m down stream swim followed by a 20k out and back cycle and 5k run which took in the famous swiss cottage path.  Even though the swim was all downstream there was a large bend in the river which some people got dragged towards which meant they swam wide and longer and had slower swims.

It rained from start to finish which made it miserable but also more amazing that over 230 athletes turned up to take part and enjoy themselves thoroughly.

We had 6 club members take part in this new race and it’s one which they would recommend for future.  John McDonald is having a great first year in Triathlon with a brilliant result to finish 16th overall in 1.01.23.  Noel Ryan squeezed in one last race before he heads off to Zurich for the Ironman next week and was happy with his race to finish 26th overall in 1.03.01.  Emmet Kelly is also having a great first season as he had a very fast swim followed by a strong bike and run to finish in 1.06.39.  Friendly rivals John Carew and Dave Forristal were next home in 1.14.05 and 1.15.06 respectively.  The all down stream swim was one of the appealing factors of this race for Caroline Russell and she had a brilliant race to finish in 1.19.10.
