28 Feb 2010   Victory at Tramore Duathlon

Last weekend the 3rd annual Spokes duathlon took place in Tramore with a large entry field of 180 taking part from all over the country with 23 of our own club taking part, some doing a duathlon for the 1st time.  The beautiful weather brought people out of the woodwork with a large crowd of spectators to cheer everyone on.

The 1st run was 3k with a blistering pace being set but Davin Power and Martin Kirwan stayed with the leaders back to Transition to grab their bikes and head out onto the 16k cycle.  Martin lost a few valuable seconds trying to clip into his pedals but not before long had progressed back up the field to lead the race.  However, he lost the lead on the bike and headed out onto the 2nd 3k run over 30secs behind the leader and also being chased by the next 2 runners.  He dug deep however and found the strength in his legs to overtake the leader with about 1k to go to now lead the race himself.  He held on to the finish to win the race in 45.59mins, the fastest winning time ever.

Davin Power also had his own battle going on heading out onto the 2nd run with 3 others beside him.  He showed his determination as he left them to finish 5th overall in 48.45mins.  Stefan Green had a great race to knock over 10mins off his time from 2yrs ago to finish 10th overall in 49.47mins.  Michael Moloney was delighted with race to finish 12th in 50.20mins.  Stephen Doyle and Emmet Kelly were both doing a duathlon for the 1st time but it was no bother to them as they finished 18th and 21st in 51.20mins and 51.42mins, with Emmet showing his competitive side as he got involved in a sprint finish with another competitor.

Darryl Hale was also doing a duathlon for the 1st time and was quite surprised at his jelly legs on the 2nd run but it didn’t stop him having a great race to finish 32nd overall in 53.24 with Martin Flynn finishing very strongly just behind in 53.55.  Louis O’Carroll was 2nd Junior home on the day with a great race to finish in 54.09.  Aidan McCarthy and John Brennan kept each other close all day to finish in 55.02 and 55.07 respectively.

Siobhán Dunphy had a spectacular race to finish 3rd female overall in 55.37.  Tom Brennan was next home in 56.46 with Mark Daly delighted with his 1st duathlon to finish in 58.32.  Derek Nolan was also delighted with his 1st race to come home in 60.41.  Bruce Wardrop, Anna Louise Muldoon and Tom Cullen were home within seconds of each other in 62.04, 62.35 and 62.40.   Olive Costello had a great race to finish in 65.16 with Jenny Kervick picking up the prize for 1st over 40 female to finish in 66.49 with Edwina Butler finishing right beside her in the same time.  Annette O’Mahony was feeling good throughout the race after winning a turbo trainer in a spot prize before the race started but managed to keep focused to finish in 70.19.  Rachel Green was delighted with her 1st duathlon to finish in 71.55.
